FAMOUS MURUGAN TEMPLES IN TAMILNADU

According to the Tamil tradition, it is believed that Lord Muruga is living in all the mountains.The god is known as Karthikeya, Skanda, Vadivela and Guha. The Arupadaiveedu (six abodes) are the most important shrines for the devotees of Muruga in Tamil Nadu, India. They are:

 Thirupparamkundram

                     

Tirupparamkundram is at a distance of eight kilometers from Madurai in South India. This holy place is associated with the divine marriage of Muruga with Tevayanai. Tirupparamkundram enshrines Murugan as the leader of the armies of the Gods, and as the Lord of Devasena, the daughter of Indra, the King of the Gods.The entire city of Madurai wears a festive look as Vishnu and Skanda from Tirupparamkundram make their way to Madurai to attend the Divine marriage between Shiva and Meenakshi.

 Tiruchendur

                

The Subramanya shrine at Tiruchendur is situated by the seashore. From Tirunelveli in the South India, one has to travel a distance of about 60 km to reach this beautiful sea resort. Muruga vanquished the demonic forces led by Soorapadma at Tiruchendur. Although the shrine is of ancient origin, much of the structure here is from the 19th through the 20th centuries. Inscriptions from the 9th century Pandya rulers are seen in the temple.As per the legends, Muruga worshiped Shiva and waged a battle against demon Soorapadman here.A well called "Naazhi kinaru" situated nearer to sea has pure water.

Tiruvavinankudi(Palani)

                 

Tiruvavinankudi(Palani) is the third Padai Veedu. The other names of Pazhani are Sivagiri and Sivamalai. Pazhani is at a distance of about 60 km from Dindigul in western Tamil Nadu.Lord Muruga in the form of a lad, clad in loin cloth and holding a shaft (Dandam) in his hand known as Dandayudha pani. Statue of Muruga made from "Navabashanam" by sage Bogar.Shrine famous for Kavadi festivals and head-tonsuring as a way of offering by devotees.

Tiruverakam(Swami Malai)

                  

Tiruverakam  popularly known as Swamimalai, it is located at a distance eight kilometers from Kumbakonam in Tanjore District on the northern banks of the river Cauvery. The Lord here presents Himself as Gurunatha Who taught the essence of Pranava to His Father, Siva ('Swami') and thus becameSwaminatha. The temple has six daily rituals at various times from 5:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., and three yearly festivals on its calendar. The annual Vaikasi Visagam festival is attended by thousands of devotees from far and near.

Tiruttani   

Tiruttani is prominent among them. Situated at a distance of 13km from Arakonam, near Madras, Tiruttani abounds in scenic beauty. In Tiruttanai, so it is said, Murugan is in a soothing and relaxed mood. His ire over Soora and his kinsmen, whom He vanquished in battle, has cooled down. His two divine consorts, Valli and Teyvayanai are with Him at this temple. Tiruttani has a unique distinction since it is the favourite hill of Muruga among all the hills in the world.As per the legends, Lord Muruga remained calm and peaceful here after waging the war with Asuras and married Valli here.

 Pazhamudircolai

                 

Pazhamudircolai comes last in the series of six holy places. This is at a distance of about 20 km from Madurai in Tamil Nadu. The temple of Muruga, Who is flanked by Valli and Teyvayanai, is located amidst quiet and beautiful landscape.On the top of the hill, there is a holy stream called "Nubra Gangai". Azhagar Kovil, the temple of Śrī Narayana, is also near Pazhamuthircholai.

Sripuram Golden Temple

Tiruvarur Thyagarajaswamy Temple 

Thyagaraja Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to the deity Shiva, located in the town of Thiruvarur in Tamilnadu, India. The temple complex covers 30 acres, and is one of the largest in India. It houses four gateway towers known as gopurams. The tallest is the eastern tower, with four stories and a height of 30 metres (98 ft). The temple has many shrines, with those of Thyagaragar and Unnamulai Amman being the most famous.

Vaitheeswaran  Temple

Vaitheeswaran Temple is a Hindu temple located in Tamil Nadu, India, dedicated to the god Shiva.Shiva is worshipped as Vaitheeswaran or the "God of healing" and it is believed that prayers to Vaitheeswaran can cure diseases. It is located 7 kilometer from Sirkali , 235 kilometer from Chennai, 27 km from Chidambaram, 110 km from Thanjavur and 16 km from Mayiladuthurai.

Ekambareswarar Temple

Ekambareswarar Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, located in Kanchipuram in the state of Tamilnadu, India.The temple covers an area of over 40 acres. The Raja Gopuram or the entrance tower to the temple which rises to a height of 172 feet was built by the Vijayanagar Monarch Krishnadevaraya. The pillared hall in front of the sanctum was also built by the Vijayanagar Kings.

Annamalaiyar Temple

Annamalaiyar Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to the deity Shiva, located at the base of Annamalai hills in the town of Thiruvannamalai in Tamil Nadu, India.It is the second largest temple (by the area used completely for religious purpose). The Karthigai Deepam festival is celebrated during the day of the full moon between November and December, and a huge beacon is lit atop the hill. It can be seen from miles around, and symbolizes the Shiva lingam of fire joining the sky.The event is witnessed by three million pilgrims.

Sri Rangnathaswamy Temple

The Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple or Tiruvarangam  is a Hindu temple dedicated to Ranganatha, a reclining form of Hindu deity, Vishnu located in Srirangam, Tiruchirapalli, Tamil Nadu, India.The temple occupies an area of 156 acres  with a perimeter of 4,116m (10,710 feet) making it the largest temple in India and one of the largest religious complexes in the world. The temple is enclosed by seven concentric walls with a total length of 32,592 feet or over six miles. These walls are enclosed by 21 Gopurams.

karpaga vinayagar temple

                                                                 

It is one of the oldest cave temple and situated in pillayarpatti,It is between pudukottai and karaikudi. Vinayagar Chaturthi is celebrated for 10 days in this temple. In this temple, 6feet of vinayagar has been carved inside and Lord Ganesha appears with 2 hands and other temples seen with  4 hands.The temple opens at 6 in the morning and stays open till 1 PM. The shrine is again opened at 4PM and is open till 8.30 PM.

Uchhi Pillayar Temple

                                                   

                                                     

It is the 7th century temple and dedicated to ganesha. It is located at Thiruchirappalli and about 124km from madurai and 320km from chennai. The shrine is at a height of 273 ft and you have to climb over 400 steps to reach the pinnacle.The Rock Fort temple complex in Tiruchirappalli is a collection of three temples – the Manikka Vinayaka temple at the foot of the hill, the Uchhi Pillayar Koyil at the top of the hill and the Taayumaanava Koyil (Shivastalam) on the hill. The temple opens at 6.00am to 8.00pm.

Adhi vinayagar temple

                              

This temple is situated at thiruvarur and dedicated to Lord Ganesha. There are 7 sthalams for performing these rituals viz. Kasi, Rameswaram, Srivanchiyam, Thiruvenkadu, Gaya, Thiriveni Sangamam & Thilatharpanapuri. The temple opens at 5.00am to 8.00pm.

Yoga Narasimha Perumal Temple

This temple is situated at Yanamalai and it is dedicated to perumal. Lord perumal grants education,buisness and no fear of enemies to the devotees.There are many sculptures carved out of the hills.This temple is about 5kms from Mattuthavani bus stand.The temple is opened from morning 5.00am to 12.30pm and evening from 4.00pm to 8.00pm.

Sri Kalamegaperumal temple

                                   

This temple is located at Thirumohoor and 10kms from madurai. It is the Vishnu temple dedicated to kalamegaperumal. There is seperate shrine for chakrathalwar, the powerful god, has 16 hands with 16 weapons. Here, chakrathalwar for development for job opportunity, buying properties and vehicles, education, foreign trip and so on. The temple visitng hours from morning 7.00am to 12.00am and from evening 4.00pm to 8.00pm.

Thirumarainathar Temple 

This temple is situated at Thiruvadhavur and about 20kms from madurai. This temple is dedicated to shiva and parvathi and this temple is 2000 years old. Thiruvadhavur is the birth place of Manika Vasagar. The temple timings from morning 6.00am to 12.00am and evening from 4.00pm to 8.00pm.
